Use. Two week brief.

Finally finished this project ready for the crit. My Owires never turned up in time, I’ve emailed the sellers on amazon and they were more than happy to send me a full postage refund which is fab!

I changed the colour themes quite a bit as once I printed the orange/blue theme it was difficult to see the colour differences between the sections. Also the orange looked random, as if it was more of a mistake than a design choice.

CMYK was the next colour theme, with the exception of black as that would of over powered the whole page. Also I changed the yellow to slightly orange as the reversed out text would of been unreadable.

Over all I’m quite happy with what I’ve produced. The layout is simple, the sections are easy to identify and I think it would help people use the print facilities at uni.

Notes from crit
– Look at designing the net for the stand, include that the guide it for Csm.
– Create some kind of navigation e.g tabs on the side.
— Full page dedicated to a tab or just added onto an original page.
– Make images slightly bigger on the step by step guides.

Not bad feedback. I could of done with more. So it anyone thinks there’s stuff I should change please let me know!

Use. Two week Brief.

As I decided pretty early on, on what format I wanted my piece to take I started straight away in creating a mock up version just to see how big it would need to be as well as if my size choice was actually right for what I wanted to produce.

I have been having a complete nightmare. As the project really only got it full swing from Monday afternoon, it seems as though we ultimately have less that two weeks to see through this project. Meaning that it’s impossible for me to have an idea, create a decent layout and get it all properly printed at a professional printers by Thursday (As friday I have screen printing induction).

Due to this I decided to go by my own binder. As from the pictures below you can see that I tried to create the binder style/function but using lose binder rings. They do no work in the slightest. So after buying my own craft binder, I got home to find out that it wasn’t supplied with any binder rings at all. Fabulous. My binder is 2:1 and it seems that everywhere, as in local office supply shops, only sell 3:1. I have brought some wires off Amazon so hopefully I will get them soon.

On this project so far it seems i’ve spent more time trying to sort out the manufacture and production rather than the actual design and layout of my pages. I guess, if I am unable to bind my pages how I want, at lest I can still change the design once I figure out how I will bind the pages.

Two week project. Use.

Today we had a talk with Malcolm from the Large format printing workshop.
It was pretty intense with the amount of information given. The prices of the printing was a shock. £3 for an A3, when I pay £1.70 maybe less depending on paper stock. But that’s a separate issue.

Notes from talk:

– All the printers are inkjet.
– Open all week.
– They are a large format printers. A3 minimum size prints up to A0 and banner printing.
– Open all week.
– No double sided printing. As paper is only coated one side and fibres mess up the printer heads.

– All files must be CMYK not RGB.
– Flatten all layers in Photoshop files.
– 175 – 350 PPI. ???
– Don’t have an A3 image and import it into Indesign to then reduce it down to A6 POINTLESS!
– Consider margins before printing, don’t turn up and print then think about binding after.

– When exporting save the file as High Quality Print.
– They have both gloss and matt black inks.
– Paper that they stock ; Smooth Cotton, Matt, Satin Smooth, Gloss.
– Don’t ever trust the screen colours, always proof print.
– The printers take a while to print, so don’t turn up half hour before your crit.

– You pay before you print.
– Opens at 9:30am – 1pm then 2pm – 4pm.
– Usually a 24hr turn around.
– Make sure the file size is correct. No scaling up.
– Don’t use TRUE TYPE.

– There will be finishing and making facilities soon.
– Make sure work that needs colour bleed has it. 2mm.

After this we spoke in groups about our ideas, I’ve now decided that the Print Ready information would be most important when your sitting at your computer or desk or where ever you create your digital work. As whats the point of having this information with you if your already at the printer or after, when you have already set your file up.

As I feel that this is desk/workspace based, I have decided that the format should be similar to that of an desk top calendar, where you can flip over the pages. There for the piece would be compact, but always be readily available. With it sitting on your desk you can refer to it when ever needed.

I think I have now found an order for the information and i’ve sketched out the layout ideas, now I need to create that file. I will have to work quickly as I don’t have a binding machine for wire binds, meaning that I will either need the printers to do it, if they can, or design it quickly so I can get it bound on Friday while at my screen printing induction. Lots of pressure on this project, as basically we have had a week to do this one.

Use. Two week Brief.

This brief is all about print. In our uni we have large, high quality print facilities. However I doubt anyone actually uses them! I don’t use it because its expensive and I can go else where to find cheap and high quality prints. However I’m sure there will be a time that I will have to print in uni, plus the more options I have the better.

I have never actually be taught or told how to set up a file to make sure its properly set for a printer to use. I normally just set my work as a PDF and make sure it is in CMYK. Never before have I considered the file size and the resolution.

This project is basically information design. Designing information that communicates a way to help students prepare work for print, inform them about how the printing process works, and how they can access the print workshop and who the technicians are.

The brief also says the piece of work must;

  • Deliver technical and practical information.
  • Influence how a user responds / consider the user and the importance of designing something from a user’s perspective.

This project follows slightly from the mediums and messages brief, as I feel like that what materials and how I design the piece must have and meaning, and that meaning will influence the user to behave in a particular way.

For Monday I must have intelligent questions to ask, presumably about print, so far I have come with;

  • Why have tutors always suggested I use laser printer rather than an inkjet for final piece work?
  • Do we have a laser printer at CSM?

As well as that, for Monday I have ideas, designs & print outs! So this weekend is going to be super busy with creating work. Tomorrow I plan to look further into information design, and how design can help people use things e.g Instruction manual, Step-by-Step guides etc. Hopefully Sunday I will have sketches / ideas and print outs!
